In 1962, educators J. Myron Atkin and Robert Karplus determined the key elements of an effective learning cycle. inThe 5E's (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) is an instructional model, an educational framework, for learning based on the five phases of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) 5E Instructional Model are designed to facilitate the process of conceptual change. Educating colleagues using the 5E process ensures consistent understanding of the goals and strategies of a business.
The design thinking process are the steps involved in the design thinking process. Design thinking originally came about as a way of teaching engineers how to approach problems creatively, like designers do. First, fully understand the problem; second, explore a wide range of possible solutions; third, iterate extensively through prototyping and testing; and finally, implement through the customary deployment mechanisms. Using the 5E's helps extend the depth of the learning process in a variety of usable approaches for creatives.
Specific 5E breakdown:
• Engagement – team members’ prior knowledge accessed and interest engaged in the phenomenon
• Exploration – team members participate in an activity that facilitates conceptual change
• Explanation – team members generate an explanation of the phenomenon
• Elaboration – team members’ understanding of the phenomenon challenged and deepened through new experiences
• Evaluation – team members assess their understanding of the phenomenon
Think of the 5E's as a system to guide learning. Starting with an event or an idea and guiding the team toward a shared understanding. The 5E sequence promotes comceptual change and deeper learning. So how does the 5E's apply to advertising, marketing or creative? The 5E model is an excellent example of how to nuture young creatives and approach team critiques.
